Mondeval

Mondeval plateau and Mount. Pelmo - Italy

Mondeval is one of the most iconic and picturesque corners of the Ampezzo Dolomites, a place steeped in history and prehistory alike.
It is renowned for the discovery of the “Uomo di Mondeval” (“Man of Mondeval”), a Mesolithic skeleton dating back roughly 7,500 years, unearthed in 1987 within a rock shelter (visible in the photo) to the left of the grazing flock of sheep, a presence that, to my eye, adds a poetic touch to the scene.
Still blissfully untouched by the “Instagram flip-flop crowd,” Mondeval rewards those willing to put in a bit of effort to reach it. The payoff is extraordinary: sweeping views of some of the Dolomites’ most majestic peaks, including Mount Civetta (veiled by clouds here) and Mount Pelmo, proudly dominating the horizon.
After several attempts over the years, last week I finally managed to find satisfying light conditions to do justice to this magnificent place.
